This Dragon profile was inspired by my year long daily calendar of
Dragons by Cirvelo Cabral. I was just sitting there going though each
day that I needed to discard and I came across a profile of a dragon
that I though was interesting. I sketch it out from scratch. I
highlighted around the edges and shaded the rest of the picture. I
realized that the highlights didn't come out as I wished so I grabbed
my new wiacom tablet to highlight and shade certain areas. It was the
first time I ever used it.

Thank you for you talent and inspration, Cirvelo Cabral

I had a need to do a quick sketch of one of my great friend’s, Rick
Hubbard. Rick was more than my friend he was also my boss. He was the
Athletic Director at William T. Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens
and I was his assistant. One of Rick’s many accolades is that he was
named Athletic Director of the Year in Palm Beach County a few years
ago.

Of all the people I’ve known, Rick falls into a very
special class of individual. He was a true leader who let his actions
speak for him. He was a man of great humility and strength of
character. He always placed others before himself. If accolades were to
be given out he would make sure his coaches and athletes received the
awards. He never tried to stand in the limelight even if he deserved to
be there. Rick was content in all situations.

Since I’ve have
worked for Rick (from the fall of 2004 to December 2008), I never saw
him angry or crossed. He always took the higher ground where many would
take advantage of his easy and soft spoken ways. He believed in his
people even when they didn’t live up to their responsibilities. My
greatest concern and motivation in working for Rick was not to let him
down. He was a mentor and a big brother. He never let me down.

Rick
had this wonderful West Virginia drawl. He had a slow and lyrical
release of words and phrases that went down like a smooth drink. He was
never caustic or harsh. He was a wonderful story teller holding your
attention as his story would wrap around you as he arrived at the
meaning of his story, usually addressing a problem that you were facing
either personally or on the job. His quiet strength was not understood
by many.

The only way to truly see Rick’s greatness as a human
being would require you as an individual to stop promoting yourself and
flaunting yourself in front of others and to stop, for one moment and
see everyone as Rick did with great love, compassion and respect for
his fellow man. Everyone seemed to be more important to Rick than his
own well being and I believe in the end this attribute to his passing.

A
few days after his death a memorial service was held in his honor in
our school’s auditorium. If you want to know the measure of a man’s
life, this night clearly showed his impact. In an auditorium that holds
over 2500 people, it was packed to standing room only capacity. People
whose lives were touched by Rick came from all over even as far as West
Virginia. We were all in awe of how many people this quiet man from
West Virginia had entered our lives and left his mark in our hearts. I
still feel his loss daily and I shall never be the same.

When I think of Rick’s life I can not help but think of the Beatitudes of Christ.
He truly lived his life this way and I know he is blessed.

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they shall possess the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for justice,
for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure of heart,
for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are they who suffer persecution for justice sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Thursday is considered a laid back day for our Art club. Tuesday is the official meeting day but sometimes more people attend thursdays. Today went well as I showed a film clip of an artist working on drawing a proportional face. I was amazed at how focused everyone was in the room. Some of my students picked up drawing paper and began to emulated the artists sketching a face.

As for myself I haven't drawn much. A "Leg Study" is all I've drawn since 2008 ended. So I just sat down and finished sketching this drawing. I had thought about tossing it but decided I needed to finish it. After finishing it, I feel a little energized an plan to do a series of drawings called the "Berserker King" We'll see what happens next.

I've got to say that there are two days that I always look forward to each week. Tuesday and Thursday are the days V.A.S.O.D meets..(The Visual Art Society of Dwyer...art club). Great students and wonderful artists. Unfortunately, I have been so bogged down with work that I haven't given them the attention they deserve. So I decided that this time is their time and work can wait.

In the last two meeting I have been showing film clips concerning various aspects of art. Of course I began with the Renaissance and a video produced by the National Gallery of Art. The first was Empire of the Eye:The magic of Illusion. This is presented in a seven-part podcast series—this is a film about
how we see, what we see, or what it is we think we see, utilizing special effects
to illustrate the artistic and visionary discoveries of the
Renaissance. Al Roker is our guide so take a little time to enjoy and learn. Click the link's

The Introduction
http://luxmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o10/clients/nationalgallery/illusion/01_introduction.m4v

The Trinity by Masaccio Part 2
In 1427 inside Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Masaccio created the masterpiece The Trinity
using linear perspective for the first time.
http://luxmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o10/clients/nationalgallery/illusion/02_trinity.m4v

The Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro Part 3
Using forced perspective in the apse of the small Church of Santa Maria
presso San Satiro in Milan, Bramante created the illusion of a much
larger space.
http://luxmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o10/clients/nationalgallery/illusion/03_satiro.m4v

One of my favorite actresses is Amanda
Tapping. For 10 years she played Air Force Officer Samantha Carter in Stargate:SG1. Later she reprises her role in Stargate Atlantis. Now she plays the lead character of Dr. Helen Magnus on Sanctuary.

During her Stargate run she was a blond but in Sanctuary she is a brunette.

This is a preliminary sketch of her as Dr. Helen Magnus. It was quick and I know the hair needs work but as a preliminary sketch I like it. For most of this sketch I used the side of my pencil

P.S. Did you know she has the blue-est eyes. WOW

There are two different genres that I love to read for pleasure. Crime or detective novels and scifi or fantasy. I drew this picture on my long flight (6.5 hours) to Alaska this
summer after listening to an audio book about Jim Butcher's fantastic character
Harry Dresden, a wizard who is also a private eye. I had planned to expand this line art to include numerous characters from the story and still plan to finish it during Christmas..

The Scifi channel made a half heart-ed attempt to serialize the books but backed out just as the series was getting good. I would love to see the series return as two hour movies.

What movie or TV show would you like to see make a comeback?

I think not...as much as I like Vox, I loved Pownce. I am thinking about getting a new site just for my Pownce friends on Vox

The origin of this sketch started at a football game. I was doodling on a piece of paper as I was monitoring ticket sales at my High School's football game . My job basically is problem solver. So I have a little luxury time to doodle as I am waiting for the next problem to surface. Later I expanded on the doodling and came up with this drawing.

My favorite piece to date...a study of eyes from a surreal approach. I would like to paint it one day.
